Mental Wealth Trialogues

My role is to facilitate open discussion within the local groups.

We encourage the use of this inspiring technique to other communities and offer training programmes to help you set up and facilitate your own groups.

We run our group with 3 main roles within the team

  • Facilitator; manages the discussion and encourages open sharing
  • Scribe; documents the discussion topics and sends this to political figures in mental health care locally. Giving a political aspect to this work
  • Artist; creating art work based on the topics of discussion.

Mental health is often seen as the domain of service providers, carers and the people who use the mental health services. However, within communities there is a huge diversity of knowledge and experience that can be used to  transform the way we discuss and develop our understanding of mental health generally.

During 2015 and 2016, the Good Mental Health Cooperative hosted seven events in Portsmouth and three events in Southampton using a powerful open dialogue and participatory process called ‘Trialogue’. In 2017, funding was gained from Healthwatch Hampshire to hold four Trialogue events in Gosport, and from the Southampton Community Fund to hold a series of Trialogue events in Southampton during 2018.

‘Trialogue’ groups already exist in many places in Europe and can help communities to change the perception that only those who work in the field of mental health are the experts in mental health.

A ‘Trialogue’ group is a neutral space where communities can gather to develop their understanding of mental health issues, including the challenges of maintaining good mental health, and to transform thinking on developing better services and healthy communities.

Trialogue meetings are welcoming and inclusive of all community members, including mental health service users, carers, families friends, professionals and anyone with an interest in good mental health and wellbeing in the community.

Mental health is everyone’s business, regardless of their background and experience
